Steely Dan - Citizen Steely Dan 1972-1980
24/11/2009
"Citizen Steely Dan 1972-1980" is a box of 4 CDs, the 7 albums of Steely Dan from the 70s plus some hard-to-find singles and other rare material. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen "borrowed" the band's name -which more or less means Mechanical Penis- from a novel by W.S. Burroughs. Their albums in their entirety include some of the most overwhelming references to the alienation of urban America in the 70s. Steely Dan formed after the Woodstock and the hippies. "Their" America is full of Wall Street Sharks, hedonism, pornography, drugs, the Vietnam fiasco and the enormous social imbalances they witnessed all around them in Los Angeles at the time. Contrary to the spirit of their era, Steely Dan denied to fall back in the safe house of "yesterday" and "tradition" who's "ambassadors" at the time were groups such as the "Band". Their albums run all through the decade of the 70s and one realizes here, by listening to them altogether, the chaotic distance between the cloudless irony of "Can’t Buy A Thrill" and the raw cynicism piercing through "Aja" and "Gaucho".
The sound of Steely Dan is luxurious : glossy, extravagant and high octane - on their albums at times there has been a parade of the Los Angeles studio elite "Mafia" and their perfectionism in record production has remained unforgettable. The punks have attacked them full of hatred whilst the group was considered a synonym of blockbuster productions and exaggeration, something like Hollywood being compared to small independent productions.
Cyber-punk William Gibson, author of the "Necromancer", who's novels are full of references to the group, says:"Steely Dan's music was, has been and remains among the most genuinely subversive oeuvres in late-20th-century pop."
Everything is present: soft-rock "Any Major Dude", jazz-funk "Night By Νight", piano motifs reminding "Bach" (Charlie Freak).
Monumental.
